How Did the Big 3 In the K-Pop Industry Fare in 2009?

Being a Korean artist or group is not just reliant on the name, but more increasing it is the entertainment company to which you belong to as well. Being able to attract the right backing makes all the difference between success and failure. Any artist who wishes to have a career in entertainment can only dream of being signed up to one of the big 3 companies: YG Entertainment, SM entertainment and JYP Entertainment.

YG Entertainment are notably credited with haveving the most popular idol group in Korea, Big Bang and rising female group 2NE1.

JYP are responsible for the success of Rain, wondergirls, 2AM/2PM and SM Entertainment arguably the largest of the big 3 have churned out hit makers such as Girls Generation, TVXQ, Super Junior, Boa, etc.

Financial reports recently released by the big 3 have surfaced and we can now report on how they did for 2009.

In revenue, SM Entertainment earned almost 61.8 billion won in comparison to 43.7 in 2008. YG Entertainment earned 35.7 billion won compared to 18.5 billion won in 2008, thats a 92% increase. JYP Entertainment earned 10.2 billion won in 2009.

After various costs have taken into account, operating profits for SM Entertainment stood at a huge 9.3 billionwon, with YG Entertainment at 7.4 billion won and JYP at 230 million won. Net profit for those companies are as follows: SM Entertainment stood at 4.5 billion won, 4.2 billion won for YG Entertainment and JYP ent had a loss of 4.7 billion won. According to reports, the losses incured by JYP Ent are mainly due to their past years efforts in increasing awareness of wondergirls in USA and have invested heavily in that venture.
